Cheesy Western at the Texas Inn

What the heck is a Cheesy Western?

No, we’re not talking about Blazing Saddles. The Cheesy Western has been the most popular sandwich at the Texas Inn since we were founded in 1935.

A Texas Inn Cheesy Western starts with a 2.8 oz. hand-formed patty of ground beef with a fresh Grade A medium-size egg whisked 10 to 15 times and fried sunny side up like an omelet. The patty is placed on top and the egg/burger combo is flipped to finish cooking and placed on a bun, topped “All The Way” with cheese, relish, and onion.

Texas Inn Downtown

From its humble beginnings as a 10-seat diner known as the Texas Tavern in Lynchburg, Virginia, the Texas Inn has won numerous awards for our chili and hot dogs, as well as been featured
on many TV shows.

Founded in 1935, we are best known for our secret recipe chili, delicious homemade relish, and our signature sandwich — the Western.

We now have three locations to serve you: 422 Main St. (Downtown Lynchburg), 110 Cornerstone St. (Lynchburg), & 95 S. Main St. (Downtown Harrisonburg).

Founded by Nick Bullington, a Ringling Brothers’ Circus advance man, the Texas Inn has been serving “1,500 people, 15 at a time,” since The Great Depression. Legend has it that Bullington paid a San Antonio, Texas chef a whopping $5 for the chili recipe in 1927. We still use that ORIGINAL recipe for our chili and our delicious golden relish.

Proudly owned by the Saunders family, including two JMU grads. #GoDukes

We Love Our Customers, And They Love Us!

From cheesy westerns to great chili beans with homemade relish, nothing beats the atmosphere that is the downtown "T room". The staff treat regulars like family and even new customers are greeted warmly. It's always great to pull up in the parking lot and our drinks are freshly opened for us when we walk in.

My family recently visited Lynchburg, and one of our "must dos" was eating at the Texas Inn. Texas Inn did not disappoint! It was delicious and kid friendly (we have five). Each kid got a chef's hat and ordered two items... because it was just that good and affordable! Highly recommend the Cheesy Western with Chili, actually anything with their chili is pretty awesome! The staff was super friendly and patient with our family of seven and made it a special experience.

Great service, great vibe, even better food. Get a cheesy western and a bowl. Don’t ask questions, just trust me on this one. If you’re in Lynchburg or passing through this is the place you have to try. Truly an icon of Lynchburg.
